Welcome To Afton Mountain Vineyards

Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's pioneer farm wineries. Our original vines were planted in 1978 and '79 and our Cabernet Sauvignon vines are among the oldest in Virginia. Our vineyards lie on the southeastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains at 960 feet in a setting of sublime beauty and excellence of terroir, that elusive fusion of sun, earth, air and water which Europe's "noble" wine grapes need to thrive. We neither irrigate nor use herbicides and employ insecticides only rarely and reluctantly.

Afton Mountain Vineyards is an anomaly in Virginia: a winery that combines the newest and the oldest. Our modernity is obvious in the gleaming, stainless steel winemaking equipment and tanks imported from Italy and Germany. But what you find at Afton Mountain Vineyards that you do not find at many other Virginia wineries is the ancient technology evident in our gravity flow processing system, in which we use gravity to move whole grapes and must and thus eliminate the potential for damage that pumping presents, and in our wine cave, an ideal environment for aging wines as old as winemaking itself.

At Afton Mountain Vineyards, we strive to make wines that bring out the best of the grapes we grow. Our models are the wines of Europe and our goals are elegant, often delicate, wines with crisp, clean tastes and the subtle flavors and aromas of the fresh fruit we use to make them. We hand harvest all our grapes, chill them and press them cold. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels or temperature-controlled stainless tanks. Pumping, filtering and other intrusive practices of modern winemaking are kept to a minimum.

Afton Mountain wines have been recognized for their excellence at international and national wine competitions in California and New York as well as at regional and Virginia events. We make Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, of course. But we also make wines found at few other Virginia wineries--Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and now Tête de Cuvée, one of only a handful of sparkling wines made in Virginia using the méthode champenoise in which the second fermentation takes place in the bottle.

Whether you are devoted to fine wine or trying wine for the very first time, we invite you to visit us at Afton Mountain Vineyards. It will be a visit you won't soon forget.
